Kinja'd!!!

The lucky person that has been assigned to me, will be getting their first small gift here in the next week or so. This is the only one I'm going to let out of the bag, I just think it's pretty awesome and wanted to make the rest of you that won't be getting one jealous! It is going to be a 3D printed keychain of the model pictured above! I'll post a picture of the finished product before sending it on its way if people want.

Making it yourself? If so, can I pinch the STL file?

I did make it myself, doing this one actually proved to be a really useful learning experience since it's not something I can just build up from measured dimensions, it actually had to 'look right'. I'll give you the .stl once I know it will print correctly and the thincknesses are correct for it to not break or anything...

If you ever want something modeled or pointers on any of that kind of stuff I'm more than willing to help.

I was trying to come up with a way to incorporate the arrows around the 'O's but I really didn't want it to have little tabs just to hold them on since it looks so clean without them.

Neat, thanks. I've been taking designs from thingiverse mainly. I need to dedicate some time to actually learning how to build my own models.

Can I totally get one? I need one.

My buddy does this professionally with aircraft parts for a machine shop, so he taught me a decent bit and I always call him when I get stuck on something... the software I'm using definitely helps too, it's quite full featured.

To do this one I actually did something he had never done before though... I pulled the jpeg of the logo into Photoshop, used the magic wand to select just the orange portion from the jpeg, then copied that selection into Illustrator and expanded it to a properly vectored format, exported that to a DXF file, then pulled it back into my modeling software and used the spline produced by the vectored DXF file as a sketch for a pad. It was an interesting way to do it, but definitely made it come out damn perfect.

Well, I'll go ahead and tell you that you are definitely not the person whose name I got...

Perhaps... We'll see how this first one comes out.

Haha yep. It's the only modeling software I know how to use, which my friend likes to joke around that I'm probably the only person in the world in that boat.

Well tell him he's wrong, and point out the F-35..... Actually, maybe don't do that. But you know what I mean!

But almost everyone else learns in another program first, then get's introduced to the big dog on the block, but I went straight to it like a boss.

you should get it laser or waterjet cut out of metal instead since it's 98% 2d features and that would be way more durable.

It would... but I have direct access to a 3D printer, but not a waterjet. :(

use the internet man! there's tons of shops that will do that stuff for you, it's pretty cheap too. send 2d DXF, get quote, buy, done!

But this is me actually making it, by myself, from beginning to end, for free.

I'm also interested in the file, and getting into 3D modeling (my background is in graphic design).
